Project Xtern

Project XternLooking to get medical coding experience and soon a medical coding job?   To help newly certified medical coders qualify for a medical coding job, AAPC introduces you to Project Xtern – a program designed to match beginning coders with facilities willing to give them field experience, and potentially their first medical coding job.

Oftentimes in traditional education centers students are placed in facilities and never given the opportunity to gain enough practical medical coding experience that is required from both the educational program and the state that certifies the medical coding course the student has attended. Project Xtern alleviates this problem.

Project Xtern shows our commitment to our members, and to the development and growth of our new medical coding professionals, and to the integrity of our medical coding credentials.

Who does the program help?

  • Students and newly certified medical coders looking to get their first taste of a medical coding job in a real office setting
  • Educational Institutions who offer a medical coding/billing program, who are willing to give a newly certified medical coder the practical or real world medical coding experience they need to qualify for their first medical coding job.
  • Program Coordinators/Extern Coordinators who are responsible for recruiting and placing medical coders
  • PMCC Instructors receive the help they need to place their students into their first medical coding job
  • Facilities who would like the benefit evaluating a potential employee on a trial basis before they extend an offer
  • All Members benefit from this program because the more certified professional coders that are on the job the more recognized the CPC® credential becomes
