Medical Coding CEU FAQs
Why are CEUs so expensive?
They are not! There are a number of ways to get CEUs at little or no costs.
How can I pay?
You can pay by credit card securely online or on the telephone with one of our operators. We also accept company checks, money orders and cashier's checks.
What is the difference between a publication and a subscription?
A publication is a book that is received once a year. A subscription is a newsletter or magazine that is received several times throughout the year.
Do all subscriptions and publications require summaries?
Yes. Publications require one coding summary and a copy of the title page to receive the allotted amount of CEUs. Subscriptions require one article summary per CEU, per article.
What are the minimum amounts of CEUs I need to earn?
| Specialty Certification: |
16 CEUs every two years |
| CIRCC Certification (Only): |
36 CEUs every two years (24 of them must be in interventional radiology or cardiovascular coding) |
| Single Core Certification (CPC®, CPC-H®, CPC-P®): |
36 CEUs every two years |
| Double Core Certification (CPC®, CPC-H®, CPC-P®): |
48 CEUs every two years |
| Triple Core Certification (CPC®, CPC-H®, CPC-P®): |

| CIRCC Certification together with any AAPC credential: |
+ 24 CEUs every two years (all must be in interventional radiology or cardiovascular coding) |
| Maximum requirement cap for more than four AAPC Certifications (CPC®, CPC-H®, CPC-P®, Specialty Certification): |
80 CEUs every two years |
| * CEUs due for the CIRCC credential will not be included in the maximum requirement cap of 80 CEUs. Even if CEUs have maxed out at 80 for other credentials, all additional CIRCC CEUs are still required to be completed. |
Do excess earned CEUs carry over from one CEU renewal period to the next?
No. CEUs must be earned and submitted within your two year renewal period.
What do I do if a seminar that I attend did not issue a certificate of completion/attendance?
Contact the vendor to obtain a certificate of completion/attendance to be submitted at the time of your renewal. The AAPC required index number must be on the certificate.
What do I do if I have a complaint regarding an AAPC approved vendor or their product?
AAPC strives to "Uphold a Higher Standard" and expects the same from our CEU approved vendors. If you encounter problems, please email your concerns to
info@aapc.com.
How will I know if my CEUs were accepted?
You will receive your updated membership card in the mail. If your CEUs are not accepted, the AAPC will notify you via mail, email, or phone if any/all of your CEUs were not accepted.
How do I know when I am due to renew my membership?
Your renewal date is printed on your membership card. You will also receive two courtesy renewal notices prior to your renewal.
Does AAPC accept inservice CEUs?
AAPC will approve, without fees, all "not for profit" educational training for coders. This includes inservices, AHIMA-provided, CMS and local chapter events.
Why don't you offer CEUs for AHIMA or CMS events?
We do offer CEUs for AHIMA and CMS audio conferences and workshops. We also offer CEUs for AHIMA online self assessments.
